In This Article

Understanding passenger leakage to nearby airports and market share for top destinations is crucial for successful operations and air service development. This article will walk you through how to analyze passenger leakage, passenger draw across your airport’s catchment area, and share of market overall or for a specific route.

You’ll be able to answer these questions after reading this article:

  1. What’s my market share from origin A to final destination B?
  2. Which counties am I losing more passenger share from? How has that trended over time?
  3. What are the top destinations attracting passengers from my catchment area?

Get started with the following steps:

Step 1: Run the Airport Leakage Advanced Report

Placer’s Airport Leakage report provides near-real time leakage by destination for any major airport across the entire US. Choosing the airport you’d like to evaluate automatically updates the competing airport list, with the option to include one, some, or all.  In this example, we analyze leakage for Long Beach Airport (LGB), location in Southern California.

a. Navigate to the Advanced Reports page and click on Airport Leakage in the left sidebar.

b. Click on the Airport tab to choose Long Beach Airport

c. Click on “Competing Airports” and choose the nearby airports for which you want to measure passenger leakage. Note that the list automatically populates. In this example we select several nearby airports, including LAX.

d. Once done, click Run to generate the report.

e. With the basic parameters of the report run, you can now analyze for all destinations served between the airports, or focused

  • Choose the destinations you’d like to compare, whether all destinations served between the airports or a specific destination of interest.
  • In the Time Frame field, select the date range that you want to analyze passenger traffic for.
  • In the Traffic field, select whether you want to track passengers who live within the catchment area or those that live without.

f. Once the report is complete, you can analyze various topics of interest, depending on your need. These include market share, yearly trends, or top destinations
